As a Fight Director...

With almost 30 years of experience - I have choreographed

167  theatrical/film productions garnering critical praise

and 3 oobr (off-off-broadway-review) awards in NYC.

Unarmed combat, found weapons, one-on-one sword duels

or mass battle sequences  - I have staged 100’s of fights

in numerous techniques and styles. Fight choreography credits may be found here.


Summer - 2017

    Fight Director for Occasion For Sin @ the Flamboyan Theatre/Clemente Solo Velez Art Center as part of Planet Connections Theatre Festivity. Taught a SAFD SPT in Unarmed @ Marymount Manhattan College in June (all the students passed). In July, I conducted 2 days of unarmed workshops for the Performance Company and a day of rapier and companion weapons for the Fight Corps at the Maryland Renaissance Festival.


Spring - 2017

    Fight Director for Come Back, Little Sheba and Picnic in rep Off-Broadway @ the Gym at Judson for the Transport Group, Kiss Me, Kate @ Marymount Manhattan College and an all-female Hamlet for the Lipstick Project at the Carriage House in Norwalk, CT. Violence Consultant for West Side Story @ Montclair State University. Fight Director for Tranquil @ Luna Stage and End of the Rainbow @ Music Theatre of Connecticut.

Assisted J. David Brimmer with unarmed and rapier&dagger classes at NYU-TSOA and the violence for Samara at Soho Rep, The Government Inspector for Red Bull Theater, The End of Longing for MCC and The Artificial Jungle for TBTB.


Fall/Winter - 2016

    Commenced my 16th year teaching stage combat @ Montclair State University and my 17th year assisting at NYU-TSOA. Choreographed the violence for The King of the Mountains @ Luna Stage, Elton John’s Aida @ Montclair State University, finished the pilot episode of Tamburlaine for VividVerse Productions and worked on Sleuth for Music Theatre of Connecticut. Also, Assistant Fight Director for Yen at MCC Theater.


Summer - 2016:

    Taught an intensive 3 week SAFD SPT (Skills Proficiency Test) Class in Unarmed Technique at Marymount Manhattan College in June. All 9 students passed: 6 basic passes and 3 recommended passes. Taught 9 stage combat classes at the SAFD-sanctioned regional workshop, the Summer Sling, in August at Brooklyn College.


Spring - 2016:

    Worked on Troll for the Rushline Company @ the Secret Theatre in L.I.C., Old Love New Love for Luna Stage in West Orange, NJ and Becket for Holmdel Theatre Company.       

    Choreographed Frank Wildhorn’s Dracula, the Musical for Marymount Manhattan College, 99 Ways to F*%k a Swan @ Montclair State University and The Runner Stumbles for Bickford Theatre in Morristown, NJ. 

    Assisted J. David Brimmer on Roundabout’s Long Day’s Journey into Night  on Broadway, The Effect @ Barrow Street Theatre, Incognito @ Manhattan Theatre Club and Indian Summer @ Playwrights Horizons.

    This is my 7th year teaching stage combat @ SUNY-Nassau Community College and I’ve assisted J. David Brimmer with stage combat classes at NYU-TSOA since November, 2000.


Fall/Winter - 2015:

      Assisted J. David Brimmer on the stage violence for The Changeling at Red Bull Theater and Mother Courage and Her Children at Classic Stage Company.

    Choreographed the violence Off-Broadway for Hir at Playwrights Horizons and Lost Girls for MCC Theater. Also worked on Tartuffe and A View From the Bridge for Marymount Manhattan College and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow for Holmdel Theatre Company in NJ.

   Finished my 15th year teaching stage combat @ Montclair State University and my 16th year assisting J. David Brimmer at NYU-TSOA. Assisted Mr. Brimmer on the violence for Hamlet in Bed @ Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, the Flea Theater’s production of Fulfillment and the Roundabout Theatre Company’s production of Therese Raquin on Broadway.


Summer - 2015:

    Taught 5 stage combat courses in July & August for the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts in downtown Manhattan [80 total students from across the country, including international students]. Taught 6 stage combat classes @ the New York Summer Sling at Pace University [Aug.13th-16th].


Spring - 2015:

    Working on Tar Beach for Luna Stage and The Winter’s Tale at Montclair State University. Taught stage combat at SUNY-Nassau Community College and assisted J. David Brimmer with 3 stage combat classes at NYU-TSOA.   

    Assisted Mr. Brimmer with the violence in I’m Gonna Pray For You So Hard, Posterity

and The Guards at the Taj @ Atlantic Theater Company, The Nether and Permission @ MCC, Soho Rep’s An Octoroon at Theatre for a New Audience, Switzerland for Geffen Playhouse, Buzzer for the Public Theatre and Gloria for the Vineyard Theatre.


Fall/Winter - 2014:

    Choreographed the violence for Troilus and Cressida @ NYU-TSOA; Macbeth @ NYU-TSOA-Atlantic Studio; Polaroid Stories @ Marymount Manhattan College; Lines in the Dust and Tilt the Unlit Candle @ Luna Stage in West Orange, NJ; and Threepenny Opera and Wintertime @ Montclair State University. Taught stage combat @ NYU-TSOA and Montclair State University. Also assisted J. David Brimmer on Punk Rock for MCC at the Lucille Lortel and Dying for It @ Atlantic Theater Company.


Summer - 2014:

   Taught a broadsword-and-shield class leading to a SAFD Skills Proficiency Test on August 14th - all 29 students passed (12 basic passes, 17 recommended passes) and taught classes at the New York Summer Sling (SAFD regional stage combat workshop) @ Pace University on August 16th & 17th.

    Worked the violence for The Taming of the Shrew for TGW Acting Studio/Baruch Performing Arts Center @ the Nagelberg Theatre and staged an ‘altercation with scissors’ in 16 Words or Less for Clubbed Thumb Summerworks at The Wild Project.

    With J. David Brimmer: Murder, a one act featured in Powerplays, Theater Breaking Through Barriers 4th Annual Short Play Festival @ the Clurman Theatre (Theatre Row) and Deathtrap for Bucks County Playhouse.


Also in 2014:

    Taught stage combat at NYU-TSOA and Nassau Community College. Also staged the violence for Henry V and Middletown at Montclair State University; The Beaux Stratagem by Farquhar/Wilder/Ludwig at Marymount Manhattan College and Marisol at Luna Stage in West Orange.

    Assisted J. David Brimmer on the violence for The Most Deserving with the Women’s Project at New York City Center; An Octaroon with Soho Rep at WalkerSpace; the Donmar Warehouse/Atlantic Theater Company production of The Night Alive at the Linda Gross Theater; and the Two Planks and a Passion Production of Breakfast with Mugabe at the Lion Theatre (Theatre Row, 42nd Street). Also, worked with Mr. Brimmer on The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner at Atlantic Stage 2; Row After Row for Women’s Project Theater at New York City Center, Stage II; and The Threepenny Opera at the Linda Gross Theater for Atlantic Theater Company.


In 2013:

    Choreographed productions of Nikkole Salter’s Carnaval, Eugene O’Neill’s Moon For The Misbegotten and Ben Clawson’s High Water Mark @ Luna Stage and worked the fights for As You Like It for NYU’s Atlantic Studio.  

    Assisted J. David Brimmer with the violence for La Dispute and Macbeth, both directed by Darko Tresnjak at Hartford Stage and Mr. Burns, A Post-Electric Play for Playwrights Horizons.

   Supplied the copious swordplay for the 36th season of the New York Renaissance Faire (Tuxedo, NY) and staged Sarah Kane’s Blasted for the Cryptic Fascinations Theater Company @ the Duo Theatre in Manhattan.

    Also assisted J. David Brimmer on Broadway with The Big Knife and Off-Broadway on Good Television, The Jammer and The Lying Lesson at Atlantic Theater Company; Hit the Wall for Barrow Street Theatre; Really Really and Reasons to Be Happy for MCC Theatre; Bethany for the Women’s Project Theater; and The Piano Lesson for Signature Theatre.


As a Stage Combat Instructor...

    I teach at New York University-Tisch School of the Arts (17 years) and Montclair State University (16 years). I taught at Nassau Community College (7 years), the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts in Summer 2015 and @ SUNY-New Paltz in Spring 2009. I’ve been a Certified Teacher with the Society of American Fight Directors since 2004.


As a Performer...

    I performed extensively with the Light Opera of Manhattan, the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players and other theater companies with over 500 performances of 26 operas/operettas to my credit. Subsequently, an actor/singer/fighter/writer/director at the New York Renaissance Faire (Tuxedo, NY) for 24 seasons, serving as principal fight director for 15 seasons.

    Also, a founding member [singer, bodhran player] of the Crimson Pirates - an acoustic folk band specializing in celtic songs, sea chanteys and drinking songs.  Over a span of 20 years, the group has performed at medieval/renaissance faires and pirate festivals across the country and have produced 7 CDs which are available on CDBaby and iTunes.
